As an age-old saying goes " a stitch in time saves nine". This is very relevant for buildings and other civil engineering assets. We should be able to identify and rectify any structural issues in the buildings before they manifest as bigger life safety issues that may need extensive repairs and probable closure of the building until the repairs are completed.

If we design the buildings for 50 years and other public civil engineering projects for 100 years design life, why do they need maintenance? A very good question indeed. As with everything we structural engineers design, we assume a certain usage for the building and design the building to withstand certain loadings and assume certain exposure conditions. However, during the usage of the building,  changes may have happened which meant the original design intent is no longer valid. There may be an extreme weather event or a Seismic event which meant there may be damage that would need to be analyzed, repaired, and monitored.

This would help identify any structural problems with the building and help address them by providing timely advice as required. This may prevent larger issues from manifesting and propagating and help in improving the longevity of the building or the asset.
